Title: Pearls of Peace
Media: Silver coated copper wire, fresh water pearls

“Pearls of Peace” is hand knit.  Knit objects grow one stitch at a time, just as living beings grow one cell at a time and lives unfold one moment at a time, organic growth.  As all those stitches, all those cells and moments build on each other to create the larger whole, so do the many efforts it takes to attain and maintain peace.

Joyce Goodman is an art jeweler whose recent work expands beyond the intimacy of jewelry to architecturally scaled sculpture.  Her work in precious metals combines a contemporized classical jewelry vocabulary with techniques most commonly associated with textiles.  It is through the knitting and weaving of metal that Goodman develops her larger pieces, which allow for a fuller exploration of the qualities of organic growth, testimony, and the aesthetics of light, all concepts central to Goodman’s work.
